Description

This seminar is designed to provide residential care administrators with current information on assisting clients with self-management of their colostomy or iliostomy. Initially, many if not most residents will be able to care for themselves after this surgical procedure. However, ability to provide self-care may diminish due to aging, illness, or other conditions. A basic understanding of conditions requiring a colostomy or iliostomy are helpful to direct care staff, as well as how collection devices function. It’s essential that the Licensee and Administrator are aware of their role in assisting clients, and when care of a resident with this Restricted Health Condition requires care from an Appropriately Skilled Professional. This course is specifically designed to address the Core of Knowledge Section on Restricted Health Conditions (RCFE); Admission, Assessment, and Retention: Restricted Health Conditions. (ARF)..

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this seminar, you will be able to:

  • Describe the licensee responsibility for accepting or retaining a resident with a colostomy or ileostomy,
  • Name at least three conditions for which colostomy or ileostomy surgery might be performed,
  • Identify the appropriate types of collection pouches for residents who have had colostomy or ileostomy surgery, and
  • Describe the role of a home health agency in providing care to a resident with a colostomy or ileostomy.
