Two new legislative bills went into effect on January 1, 2015 that increase the amount of training that RCFE Administrators must complete.

AB 1570, authored by Assemblymember Wes Chesbro, increases the hours of the RCFE Initial Certification Training Program from 40 hours to 80 hours effective January 1, 2016. At least 60 of these training hours must be attended in person.

This Bill also requires additional direct care staff training. Currently, direct care staff must complete 10 hours of basic orientation training within the first four weeks of employment. This new Bill requires 20 hours of basic orientation training prior to working independently with residents,which must include 6 hoursof dementia-specific training, and 4 hours of training on postural supports, restricted health conditions, and hospice support care.It requires an additional 20 hours within four weeks of employment, which must include an additional 8 hours of dementia specific training. Currently, direct care staff must also complete a minimum of four hours of basic annual inservice training. This Bill increases that amount to 20 hours of annual inservice training, 8 hours of which must be dementia-specific training, and four hours of training on postural supports, restricted health conditions, and hospice support care.
