Description

The purpose of this course is to provide administrators with current principles of housekeeping, sanitation, and infection control specific to the residential care and community care setting. The course is an update on information regarding potentially communicable diseases. While disease epidemics and pandemics can divert our attention to prevention of the specific disease of the season, it is essential to remain focused on core principals of disease prevention from other sources. Hospital and community acquired infections remain an epidemic of concern. Well controlled with antibiotic medications until this past decade, many bacteria are returning to our society in new and difficult to treat strains. Blood borne pathogens, such as HIV and hepatitis, remain a matter of concern for all age groups. Additionally, new strains of common viruses, including those that are easily transmitted from an infected person through the air (air-borne), continue to present serious and wide-spread risk of disease and death. Finally, external and internal parasites pose serious health hazards in the long term care setting. In order to protect residents, employees and ourselves, it is crucial to know how to access reliable sources for the facts about preventing infectious diseases and parasite infestations. We must adopt clear and science-based policies and practices in response to preventing these and other emerging epidemics. This seminar is specifically designed to address the Core of Knowledge sections on Core of Knowledge sections on Physical & Psychosocial Needs: Illness/Injury Plan; Business Operations & Management, Supervision & Training of Staff: Illness/injury prevention plan (GH, STRTP), Physical Needs: Universal Precautions; Management & Supervision of Staff: Illness/injury prevention plan (ARF, RCFE).
